Our commitment to Craft

Craft is the essence of LOEWE. As a house we are about craft in the purest sense of the word. ‘This is where our modernity lies, and it will always be relevant.’ – Jonathan Anderson, creative director.

Our story began in Spain in 1846 as a collective dedicated to leathermaking, and ever since we have valued artisanal techniques in our approach to modern design. Passing down our knowledge through generations, our legacy of craftsmanship remains the living soul of the house.

This is reflected in our belief in the importance of craft in today’s culture and our commitment to supporting contemporary art, craft and culture around the world.

The Craft Prize

Founded by Jonathan Anderson in 2016, the annual LOEWE FOUNDATION Craft Prize aims to support and acknowledge working artists whose talent, vision and will to innovate promise to set a new standard for the future.

Winner of the 2019 edition

Genta Ishuzuka’s lustrous lacquer work Surface Tactility #11. Using ancitent Japanese lacquer techniques from the 7th century and a modern, almost mundane motif, he ponders the reciprocity between past and present.

Leather expertise

Some of our leather artisans have been with us for as long as fifty years, while the LOEWE School of Leather Craft in Madrid ensures these time-honoured skills are passed on to new generations. An annual exhibition for Salone del Mobile

Every year at Salone del Mobile Milano, one of the most respected design events in the world, we produce an exhibition and capsule collection to reaffirm the brand’s commitment to craftsmanship by reframing traditional practices in a modern setting.

Each project explores a specific craft theme or technique — baskets, bowls, marquetry in leather – and encompasses deep research into these design codes and collaborations with artisans from around the world. Culminating from this process is the creation of original works and reinterpretations of LOEWE products, which represent a unique exchange of the house’s core expertise with skills from other disciplines.
