Jennifer Zurick is a self-taught American weaver who specializes in creating baskets made from black willow bark. Living in the Kentucky foothills, where the tree is watered by the rivers and thrives in the rich soils, Zurick´s creativity is nourished by this local wildlife. Active inside this environment, she harvests the willow tree and keenly maintains her garden, ensuring a sensitive and respectful dynamic with the raw organic materials she uses in her work. "I aspire to create simple, elegant woven vessels that possess a richness of spirit and a presence embodying the soul of the tree from which they came.”
Her baskets are primarily inspired by Native American weaving traditions, although her influences extend beyond her immediate horizons following her extensive travels across Asia and South America. The experiences further enhanced her knowledge about indigenous craftsmanship and brought rich new dimensions to her art. The culmination of this life and work are her thoughtfully woven vessels that animate with the rich textures of the fibre and dance to the rhythms of her handcraft process.
