As Redeiras
This collective of women from Galicia, known as the “Radeiras”, are preserving weaving and knot-making techniques that have accompanied Northern Spain’s fishing industry for centuries. The Asosiación de Redeiras Illa da Estrela de Carme recycle discarded nets and collect rocks and pebbles from the shoreline to create artistic and practical pieces imbued with the story and symbolism of the sea. The scene of these women lined up on chairs weaving their maritime creations has become one of the most sought out and photographed attractions in the ports.
Using their accumulated knowledge of fishing net and knot tying, the Galician female collective has produced a series of charms inspired by Spanish seaside culture. A row of sardines bound side by side evokes the Andalucian barbeque dish “espetos”, while the weights on Galician fishermen´s nets are represented with stones and resin eggs tied up with Calf strings.
