The eye of Bamako

FOUNDATION LOEWE presents La Joie de Vivre, a collection of over 45 works by the late Malian photographer Malick Sidibé, at this year’s PHotoESPAÑA festival in Madrid, from June 2 through September 23.

Finding freedom

From his studio in the capital city, Sidibé depicted the energy, style and swagger of an exciting new urban scene, conveying the essence of a society in transition following Mali’s independence from France in 1960.

Selected works

Curated by María Millán, the show includes portraits, documentary photographs of street life, nightlife and youth culture during the 1960s and 1970s.

Continued dialogue

Sidibé was instrumental in the assertion of an emerging youth culture. This exhibition, is part of LOEWE and the LOEWE FOUNDATION’s ongoing exploration of photography’s role in capturing social change.
